Council fines for unsafe tyres has almost doubled over the last three years.
But questions have been asked about whether parking officers are qualified to judge whether a tyre is safe or not.
However, council says it is to make sure all vehicles are road worthy. NZ Transport Agency crash statistics shows tyre punctures, blow-outs and worn tyres were contributing factors in a number of serious crashes - some involving fatalities.
Auckland and Rotorua councils issue infringements while Hamilton, Waikato and Whangarei do not.
