When it comes to the ideal family car New Zealanders can't go past a sports utility vehicle (SUV).
New Zealand demand for SUVs is among the highest in the world and industry experts expect they will make up half of all new passenger car sales within three years. They already represent 47 per cent of new cars sold this year, with the most popular being the Toyota RAV4.
Station wagons have almost disappeared and large sedans were also becoming less popular. About 70 per cent of new vehicles were purchased for vehicle fleets and 30 per cent for private use, said David Crawford of the Motor Industry Association.
Double-cab utes were also becoming increasingly popular, especially for people who used them for business during the week and personal use at the weekends.
