Volkswagen AG in Germany has confirmed the total number of New Zealand diesel vehicles affected by the emissions software issue to date is 5,548.
This software in question causes discrepancies in the values for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during emission testing in 4 cylinder 2.0 & 1.6 TDI diesel engines, (engine code name Type EA 189).
The operation of an affected vehicle is not impaired and can be used as usual without restrictions. Volkswagen NZ is in the process of contacting affected customers and informing them of the next steps. Volkswagen AG in Germany is working as quickly as possible to find a technical solution and once that is known, customers will be informed of the action plan to remedy their vehicles.
"While Volkswagen New Zealand did not know about the software discrepancy, we would like to apologise for what has happened. We value the trust our customers place in us and we will be in contact with them as soon as a solution is identified" said Tom Ruddenklau, General Manager, Volkswagen New Zealand. Further updates would be released as the company works through the issue.
This table shows known affected vehicles sold as new in New Zealand.
VW NZ said it ws continuing to work with the NZTA to clarify used imports.
